Four defenders out for Sunday

Posted Oct 8, 2010

The Bills will be a bit shorthanded among their back seven on defense Sunday as two of their linebackers, a safety and a cornerback will be out of the lineup against the Jaguars.

Linebackers Keith Ellison (knee) and Arthur Moats (elbow) along with safety Bryan Scott (knee) and cornerback Terrence McGee (back) will not be available for Sunday’s game.

“They’re all out,” said head coach Chan Gailey following practice on Friday.

Buffalo could potentially be down to just three healthy cornerbacks for Sunday’s game if Ashton Youboty can’t play either. He’s fighting through a hamstring injury, but has not been more than just a limited participant in practice this week.

When asked if Youboty would be listed as questionable Gailey said: “Yeah questionable at least, probably worse.”

That would leave Buffalo with just Drayton Florence, Leodis McKelvin and Reggie Corner at the cornerback position, with safety Donte Whitner likely to assist in some coverage situations.

“You have to take into account every situation like that,” said Gailey. “Sometimes we’ve been short at linebacker and had to adjust. Last week we were a little short at defensive end with Marcus out and we had to adjust. Any time you’re missing people that have played a lot of time, like a Terrence McGee or any of those guys. It makes it hard. It’s not easy to just plug somebody in there and expect the same results.”

Fortunately for the Bills they’re playing a Jacksonville team that rarely goes four wide on offense.

In Buffalo’s subpackages Bryan Scott and Keith Ellison have served as the primary nickel linebackers alongside Paul Posluszny. With both of them out for Sunday veteran Reggie Torbor figures to be the most likely replacement in that defensive personnel grouping.

Davis, Stroud back
Andra Davis and Marcus Stroud both practice fully on Thursday and Friday and are expected to start Sunday. Davis is playing with a torn labrum in his shoulder and intends to do so for the remainder of the season.

Both Davis and Stroud missed last week’s game against the Jets.
