COMMUNITY: Fred was chosen as the 2010 winner of the Buffalo Bills/NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, as voted on by selected members of the Western New York community. The award was given to Fred for a combination of his excellent play on-the-field and his tremendous off-the-field contributions to the community. In 2010, Fred served as an active spokesperson for the Buffalo Bills Billieve Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. Fred and his wife, Danielle, were at the Light the Falls Pink event held on October 1st and were featured in a PSA on the Buffalo Bills webpage. Fred also supported the league wide initiative by wearing pink cleats, gloves and wristbands during the BCA home game on October 3rd vs. the New York Jets.
Fred also showed his support by visiting Armor Elementary in Hamburg, NY which was named the “Play 60 Super School” through the Back to Football Friday Program. Fred participated in the Ultimate Physical Education Class and presented the $10,000 grant to the school so they can continue their health and wellness initiatives.
Fred served as a spokesman for the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program and attended their event that took place in the Buffalo Bills Fieldhouse. The event stressed the importance of the national Play 60 program and getting 60 minutes of physical activity each day as well as practicing a healthy lifestyle by eating right and making conscious decisions about wellness. Fred was also a spokesperson for the 2010 Kids Escaping Drugs Campaign “Take Pride in Making Strides.” With the help of Fred raising awareness for the cause, Kids Escaping Drugs was able to raise $3,295 in a two hour autograph session. Fred has been an active member in Kids Escaping Drugs for the past 2 years.
Fred also attended the Red Ribbon Rally in 2010. Fred, along with other Bills teammates spoke to students in Buffalo Public Schools and encouraged them to make good decisions and stay away from drugs. He also rallied with his teammates for the Feed the Children event in November when a tractor trailer of food was donated to the Food Bank of WNY. Fred helped load boxes of food into the vehicles of 400 families, which were selected by the Food Bank of WNY.
In addition, Fred participated in the 2010 Community Ticket Donation Program by donating 20 season tickets to Carly’s Club. Over 200 people were part of Freddy’s Fanatics and attended Buffalo Bills home games where they were also treated to food and beverage coupons compliments of Fred.
