COLLEGE: Began his collegiate career at Georgia before transferring to South Florida following his redshirt freshman season… Did not have to sit out a season because South Florida was an NCAA Division I-AA program at the time… The Bulls made the switch to Division I football in 2001… Played in 42 games (39 starts) for South Florida, amassing a school record 367 tackles (230 solo)… Also produced 37.0 tackles for loss, 8.0 sacks, 26 QB pressures, nine passes defensed, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions and a 56-yard touchdown on a fake punt… Started 10 games at middle linebacker as a senior, posting a school single-season record of 117 tackles (72 solo) including a team-record 19.0 stops for losses.
PERSONAL: Was an all-state selection as a senior at Lake Howell (Florida) High School, also the alma mater of Baltimore defensive end Trevor Pryce… Named the Class 6A Player of the Year his senior year… Recorded 110 tackles (74 solo) and rushed 41 times for 225 yards with five touchdowns as a senior… Full name is Kawika (pronounced kuh-VEE-ka) Uilani Mitchell… His first name translates to David… He and his wife Billie have a son, Lewai (pronounced Levi) and a daughter, Eliza.
COMMUNITY: In 2008, Kawika participated in an autograph signing as the spokesperson for the Verizon Wireless HopeLine cell phone collection program . The HopeLine program provides wireless phones and funding to domestic violence agencies nationwide. The phones are distributed to domestic violence survivors for use in an emergency, and to help find housing, employment, childcare, etc. The cell phone collection took place at the Buffalo Bills game vs. San Diego Chargers with each fan that donated a phone receiving a poster featuring Kawika.
